Rap Kreyol - Hip-Hop Culture in Haiti

A pedestrian passes a mural memorializing the lives of three members of the well-known rap kreyol group Barikad Crew in downtown Port-au-Prince, Haiti on July 21, 2008. The rappers' deaths in a fiery automobile accident the month prior resulted in an outpouring of support for them and the remaining 8 members of Barikad Crew when between 60,000 and 100,000 individuals descended on the city for their funeral. The support highlighted the popularity of the largely underground rap kreyol movement and has inspired a number of young groups to try to fill their shoes.
